2018 Bookish & Not So Bookish Resolutions

Posted 1st January 2018 by Wattle in Books, Whimsical Nature / 28 Comments

Part of me cannot believe that it’s already 2018, and part of me can. It’s so weird. 2017 seemed to fly on by. I hope 2018 is a great year for all of us!

I thought I’d split my resolutions into two categories, bookish and real life ones; since I actually have both this year!

1. Blog at least twice a week (knowing me, this may be ambitious).
2. Keep track of books read and money spent – I plan to bring back my monthly overview (which I only managed to do in January last year ๐Ÿ˜† )
3. Read 50 books this year.
4. Change my website layout.
5. Read more diverse books.
6. Buy less, borrow more.
7. Read some of the dozens of comic books I own.
9. Do another purge (gain shelf space!)
10. Read one classic.

1. Do yoga! I have a 21 day yoga habit challenge I want to complete and the Perfect Body Yoga Program (both are by Bad Yogi).
2. Keep going to Roller Derby. I seem to get to a certain point and then stop. I don’t necessarily want to graduate to the next level, but I would like to get some consistency and improvement going.
3. Pass my classes.
4. Keep my mental health. Last year wasn’t amazing, but I feel like I’m in a better place now and would like to stay that way.
5. De-clutter. This is a big ask. I have an entire wardrobe full of crap. But it needs to be done. Bit by bit, I can do this!
6. Do more crafts. I have heaps of wool, and plenty of cross stitch patterns floating around. It’s about time I did something with them.
7. Drink more water – water is SO BORING but really, that’s no excuse.
8. Cut back on sugar. I’ve gone from 2 to coffee to 1, surely I can at least halve that again.

Not a resolution, but I’m also going to give Bullet Journaling a go. I think it will be useful for my classes and maybe even blogging!

And something else I’m considering is if my study would make a better library/yoga room. I’m debating getting rid of my desk and replacing it with (more) bookshelves. I don’t use the desk for studying (that’s what the dining table is for) – I just, you know…put stuff on it, and my desk chair is where my jackets live ๐Ÿ˜ hmmmm.

We shall see what 2018 brings.

  1. Awesome goals, Wattle! I would love to read 50 books this year, too, but I’m not 100% I can do that, since it’ll be my first year of college this year! Definitely YES to reading more diverse books, though. There are so many coming out (and are already out)!

YES to passing classes and maintaining good mental health. This is so important. <3 Let me know if you need any support at all–I'll be here! And YES also to drinking more water. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Here's to a wonderful 2018!

    • Oh god, school always takes it out of you. I was expecting to still have time when I study but lol noooope (probably doesn’t help that I procrastinate by doing things that aren’t reading haha)

  2. Best luck with all your goals, Bre! Iโ€™ll be excited to see what you do with your site layout because this one is already pretty awesome. ๐Ÿ™‚ I read #6 wrong at first and thought is said โ€œborrow less, buy more.โ€ And I thought, โ€œhm, thatโ€™s an interesting resolution.โ€ LOL

Yes on the de-cluttering! I REALLY need to do some of that. Particularly clothes. I add more but donโ€™t weed anything out. Not good. More water is always a goal. I do good for a while and then backtrack. Best of luck to us both!

    • Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ I do love this layout, but every time I look at it I think ‘it’s summer ,why is this still up’ despite the fact that by the time I get around to changing it, it’ll be winter again lol

Hahaha I would love to buy more ๐Ÿ˜› alas, no space!

  3. Great goals! I also hope 2018 is a great year. I like your goals to keep blogging and do a monthly overview of books you acquired and how much you spent. i also have a blog redesign in my goal post for 2018 :). That’s nice you mad mental health one of your goals too, I think it’s very important to keep your mental health in mind. I also have a lot of clutter, so I can imagine what a big task it is to clean that out. Good luck with your goals!

    • Thanks Lola ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m dreading cleaning out all the clutter, I’m not sure how I’ll manage it without having to rent a skip or something to throw everything in! I’m hoping most of what I get rid of I’ll be able to donate, so it might be slow progress (I don’t like taking in too many things at once haha)

  4. You don’t sound too sure about some of you bookish goals lol. You should make a post about roller derby! Like, I didn’t even know it had levels? I’d love to know more about it, sounds interesting. Also, water is not boring! Have you tried adding Crystal Light or some other flavor thing? Idk how much sugar that has, but it’s definitely better than the really sugary drinks out there. Good luck with all your goals!

    • lol I’m never sure about my bookish goals! ‘I want to do this, but eeeeh I probably won’t’ A for effort!

Perhaps I will do a roller derby post ๐Ÿ™‚ I think every league is different, but a lot of them are similar (there’s soooo many leagues all over the world, it blows my mind!)

I’m not sure if we have crystal light here, but I bet we have something similar. We do have these flavour drop things, I have no idea what’s in them but they might be worth a shot! I’ve tried adding lemon and lime but it just makes me more thirsty? Which seems weird.

  5. Oh you just inspired me to do 2018 book and non-book resolutions. I didnโ€™t do it last year. Thanks for sharing yours. Iโ€™m planning to try yoga this year. I hope you accomplish all of them. โค๏ธ???

    • Sorry for the late reply, my filters put your comment to spam *sigh* I hope you manage to try yoga this year ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s gentle exercise but feels good!

  6. Have you seen the bookcases with the little table attached Bre? They sell them at Fantastic Furniture, not sure if you have them over there. But basically at desk level, the shelf extends out past your bookcase, just enough to fit a laptop and a small things and has two font legs. Such a space saver and even if you didn’t use it as a desk, that extra table level shelf could be great for unsorted books.

Drinking more water was one goal I achieved last year too. On average I drink two bottles per day, so 1.2lt and you get used to it. Any more than two bottles makes me feel sick oddly though. You could use those flavoured water drops in there if it’s too boring too. This year I’m planning on trying new recipients and getting back into the kitchen for fun. I cook 6 nights a week usually but used to love baking on a Sunday so hoping to get back into it.

    • I hadn’t and then I looked them up and oh my god I NEED ONE! Fantastic Furniture do exist here, but those bookcases do not (rude). But I reckon I could get someone to make me one lol I really should have kept doing woodwork at school, it was so fun, I could make one! (I really couldn’t, but parallel universe me could).

Do you get used to it? I’ve done it a few times where I’ve had more water than normal but go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I have to drink 1L before I get blood tests done (otherwise my veins don’t show) and it’s a nightmare lol

  7. Do you have to change your blog layout? It’s so pretty though…

Your resolution actually made me a little bit ashamed of my own resolution XD. Mine looks so lazily written compared to your detailed list. Great job!

    • I do love this layout, I have more cute characters to use in the same style; I just need to decide how to put them together! I’m a bit obsessed with the artists work ๐Ÿ˜†

Aw, I feel like I waffled, so thank you!

  8. Your own library/yoga room would be awesome! I really want to get back into the groove of doing yoga – well, I’ve only taken a couple classes, so not really “back in” but find my groove with it!

I’m going to do an entertainment bullet journal of sorts this year. I’ve never done a Bujo but I like the idea, so I figured I’d use it for keeping track of books, movies, etc.

    • Haha I’m the same. I’ve done a number of classes over the years, but never manage to stick to it!

The bujo thing is fun so far, I’m wondering when I’ll forget about it though (like I do with everything else ๐Ÿ˜› )

  9. You told me about Bad Yogi last year and I love her! I even listened to her podcast. Now I jump between her and yoga with Adrienne. Best thing I discovered in 2017, I just love my time-outs on the mat. De-cluttering is always on my list too, but as soon as I tackle it, it just builds back up again. Good luck with all your goals.

    • I’m so glad to hear that! They’re both great aren’t they? ๐Ÿ™‚ totally different styles, but sometimes that’s what you need!

Oh I hear you. The clutter is never ending :/
