Sunday Post #9

Posted 26th November 2017 by Wattle in Blog Hops & Memes / 35 Comments

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer. Itโ€™s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

I just saw Murder on the Orient Express with my parents, at a cinema that has just been renovated so all their cinemas have reclining seats. Being short isn’t the best with these, one’s feet don’t touch the floor and the reclining aspect was too far back to be comfortable. I might have to take a pillow next time ๐Ÿ˜†

This week has been unexpectedly busy, so my Thor review didn’t get done as planned. I am aiming for this week (I did say Monday somewhere, but it might be Tuesday. It will happen though!)

CURRENTLY READING
(All book covers in this post will take you to their respective Goodreads pages).

Still listening to this (well, I’ve not touched it for over a week, but whatever), and I’ve not had time to pick anything else up ๐Ÿ™ I’m not really sure what I want to read next.

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

Sunday Post #8
Book Review: By The Currawong’s Call by Welton B. Marsland. I’m a bit bummed this book seems so niche (m/m and Australian) that not many are enthused by it, but while it has a handful of reviews they’re all good ones ๐Ÿ™‚

NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG

Movie Review: Thor: Ragnarok (for real this time!)

With any luck there’ll also be a book review, but it’ll be whatever takes my fancy when I get to writing it out.

NEW ON MY SHELVES

Bought:

All the Yasmine Galenorn ones were on sale when I bought them ($1.29 AUD, $0.99 USD).

I also ordered a bunch of historicals last night, as I’ve decided that’s my next genre to try. It’s baffling that the first of many series aren’t available on kindle, so I went for paperbacks instead (which were cheaper than the rest of the series e-books anyway. Weird).

For Review:

None! I consider this a success, now if only I could stop buying books until the end of the year (pre-orders don’t count ๐Ÿ˜› )

I didn’t do one of these last week, but I’m back this week…with an awful lot of books added to my shelves, oops! Though in my defence, it took 6 weeks for half of them to arrive, and then they all came at once ๐Ÿ˜†

And I finally got back to roller derby this week, I hadn’t been for a while due to some health issues; so it was fun to start all over again. I can slow down now (still can’t stop haha) ๐Ÿ˜€

CURRENTLY READING
(All book covers in this post will take you to their respective Goodreads pages).

Yep. Still listening to the audio! I really do need to come up with a better way to listen to my books that isn’t at work, when I’m not focused on something ๐Ÿ™ I’m not reading anything else at the moment, I just finished a book and haven’t decided what to pick up next.

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

Well…the last two weeks:

Sunday Post #7
2017 HoHoHo Readathon
Book Review: A Fatal Collection by Mary Ellen Hughes
Letting The Fangirl Out #1
2017 HoHoHo Readathon Round-Up

NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG

Movie Review: Thor: Ragnarok
Book Review: By The Currawong’s Call by Welton B. Marsland

There may be a second book review, but I haven’t quite decided yet (I really should do posts in advance!)

NEW ON MY SHELVES

Bought:

E-books (Southern Spirits and Rescued were freebies):

Paperbacks (the last three are non-fiction). All the cozy mysteries! I’ve discovered a lot of the ones I want to read aren’t available on kindle (and if they are, I’m geoblocked ๐Ÿ™ ) so physical books it is!

None!

This week has been…something. Work was completely insane as it was month end, and I was all on my own. The trouble with having deadlines like this is that one week is super stressy while the rest of the month is pretty cruisy.

I decided to change my degree at uni in the midst of all this. I’ve been thinking about it since I dropped the current semester. Environmental Science and Marine Science just hasn’t turned out to be what I was expecting. So I’ve requested a change to Genetics & Molecular Biology with Biological Sciences as a secondary major (yes, I can still make it about plants and the environment!) I won’t find out if it’s approved or not until mid-December, but as it’s not a restricted course it should be fine ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s been quite warm this weekend, so I went clothes shopping yesterday ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I bought shorts! I usually spend summer wearing skirts; but my preference is for trousers/jeans/not skirts. I’ve hated shorts forever but I now own 4 pairs. Madness!

CURRENTLY READING
(All book covers in this post will take you to their respective Goodreads pages).

Still listening to Case Histories (I’m very slow with audio, since I tend to listen to them at work), and I started The Cosy Christmas Chocolate Shop yesterday. I was pretty peeved with it at 12% but it’s got a bit better (not very Christmassy at all though, I’m disappointed!)

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

Sunday Post #6
Book Review: A Scone to Die For by H.Y. Hanna
Book Review: The Best Little Christmas Shop by Maxine Morrey

NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG

2017 HoHoHo Readathon goal post

And I’m not sure what else yet, it shall be a surprise for everyone!

NEW ON MY SHELVES

Bought:

I don’t buy box sets like this often, but I just couldn’t resist. It’ll give me an opportunity to try some new to me authors ๐Ÿ™‚ I also pre-ordered a couple of other box sets, but they totally don’t count this week!

What did I do last week? *ponders* I saw Thor: Ragnarok, and it was super duper fun and great and I really liked it, but I didn’t love it. There’s a couple of things that unsettled me…I need to see it again to make sure (oh no, how awful for me) and then I think I’ll review it.

CURRENTLY READING
(All book covers in this post will take you to their respective Goodreads pages).

I’m still reading The Best Little Christmas Shop ๐Ÿ™ it’s taking me forever. Case Histories is an abridged version, which I would usually avoid; but it’s narrated by Jason Isaacs soooo…I made an exception haha

A whole bunch of nothing happened last week. But that’s okay. Because this week? If all goes to plan, I’m seeing Thor: Ragnarok on Thursday, woo hoo! Thor is my favourite of the Marvel movie series, I don’t really care about the others anymore (they managed to burn me out AND piss me off with the last Avengers movie so…*shrugs*)

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

Sunday Post #4
Book Review: Debauched by Jennifer Dawson
Book Review: Christmas at the Gin Shack by Catherine Miller

NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG

Book Review: Taken by Jennifer Dawson

There will be another book review, but I’m not sure what yet!

NEW ON MY SHELVES

There’s a theme this week. Can you see it?

The Christmas Gift by Monica McInerney is less than 35 pages long lol but it sounded cute, and I was browsing Christmas titles for the HoHoHo Readathon! I usually read novellas during readathons, which is probably cheating a bit, but they’re so easy to get a full story and move on to the next. I have a couple of actual novels that are on my ‘maybe read’ list, if I have enough time.

And that’s it from me! I hope you all had a wonderful week. I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of October already ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Our weather has turned and it’s starting to become warm. I am not ready for summer! It is allegedly spring (my allergies agree) but it’s almost at the point where I’m considering breaking out my fan at night. I’m not quite there yet though, there’s apparently some sporadic winter weather on its way. I’m not sure I believe it, looking at the blue sky right now!

My iron infusion went well, although it took 50 minutes instead of 15, but they knew I was a challenge beforehand ๐Ÿ™‚ I had to lay there and watch morning tv, the horror.

(All book covers in this post will take you to their respective Goodreads pages).

I just started this one this morning, it’s moving VERY quickly. The crime took place within the first 8%, we just dived straight in to the story (and there’s a super obvious suspect I’m assuming didn’t do it!)

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

Sunday Post #3
Review of Here Comes The Witch by Ani Gonzalez

NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG

Book Review: Debauched by Jennifer Dawson
Book Review: Christmas at the Gin Shack by Catherine Miller

It turns out I have a period of time where I thought I’d reviewed books and didn’t ๐Ÿ™ so I’ll be slowly making my way through those over the next few weeks.

NEW ON MY SHELVES

Origin and The Furthest Station are both really pretty hardcover books, the latter being a novella. The rest are Kindle versions.

Bought:

Apparently I can’t resist a sale when it comes to ebooks!

I was up until just before 2:30am this morning reading this baby. I thought it’d take me the weekend to read my way through it, but I could not put it down. It’s been a long while since a book did that to me!

I have made close to zero progress in my blog ahead challenge so far, but I have written a bunch of notes for books I have read over the past few monthsโ€ฆsome of which I didn’t actually remember reading, oops!

This week has been super slow for some reason. You know those days that just drag and drag? This week was full of them. I’m getting an iron infusion bright and early at 6:30am tomorrow (yikes!) which I’m almost glad about. Maybe I won’t be so tired in the near future, and since it’s so early, I should be home for breakfast – although I might need to take a nap afterwards. I have awful veins, so I’m trying to stay hydrated. Water is so boring ๐Ÿ™

CURRENTLY READING
(All book covers in this post will take you to their respective Goodreads pages).

I’m only a few pages into this so haven’t really got a feel for it yet, but the main character is an 84 year old lady who is searching for the perfect gin & tonic (despite not being a drinker myself, I appreciate looking for the perfect tasting something – for me it’s ginger ale soda in the USA which SUCKS BEYOND BELIEF! It’s not gingery at all, and every time I go there I try a few more…ginger beer soda doesn’t count, it’s not the same). Oops, how’s that for off topic randomness?

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

There were two posts on the blog last week (I know, how weird!)

The Sunday Post (#2)
Review of Pressed to Death by Kirsten Weiss

NEW ON MY SHELVES

Mainly the virtual sort (I have some actual REAL books winging my way next week, exciting!)

Although I totally just remembered, I got a paperback copy of Big Little Lies. All those Emmys have convinced me I need to see Alexandar Skarsgรฅrd in it watch it then read it! Everything else is on my Kindle though:

I haven’t bought or received this many books in a long time, it’s kind of exciting! Even though I have a zillion other books to read, I’m sure I’ll fit them all in *cough* at some point.

Hope you all had a great week and weekend. Who knows, I might even have more posts go up this week ๐Ÿ™‚

Two posts in one day, what is happening?! IS IT A SIGN THE APOCALYPSE?! I don’t blog for a month and then suddenly…

Okay I’ll stop being dramatic now.

I realised while going through my blog posts earlier that I’ve not done my monthly overview of books since January. Yikes! I might try to start that again next month.

As mentioned in my blog ahead challenge post earlier, I’ve dropped out of university for this semester. I’ll go back next year, hopefully refreshed and with a better outlook. This year has been such a struggle for me motivation wise.

I did finally catch up on Preacher which is such a weird show, but in a good way. Now I’m just waiting for The Librarians to come back! I watched the first movie of the film trilogy The Librarians is based on the other day, it was so cheesetastic. It’s a wannabe Indiana Jones and I enjoyed it a lot (I’ve never pretended to have good taste haha)

As for books…

CURRENTLY READING

Nothing! But I did just finish the first two books of the Bewitched by Chocolate series by H.Y. Hanna, so I’m thinking my next book will be the third one. I do love the covers of this series:

Nothing, but I did sign up for the October blog ahead challenge ๐Ÿ™‚

I thought it would be a good time to start doing these posts again. You know, when something actually happens haha. As a follow up to my last post (which was forever ago, oops!) I did pass my chemistry unit, with 51% overall. By the skin of my teeth (I’m annoyed that I went from 87% down to that, but whatever. I’ll take it!)

Uni break has been nice. I have done absolutely nothing though. I’m in a reading slump. Like, I want to read, but I don’t want to read; and nothing is really holding my interest (I keep trying though!) Usually when I’m in a reading slump, I’m watching all the tv shows. But I haven’t been doing that either! I’ve caught the first three episodes of season 2 of Preacher; now I’m just watching them pile up and will marathon them at some point (when I’m meant to be working on an assignment, no doubt).

I have been listening to music a lot. With the passing of both Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington recently, it hasn’t been exactly happy music *sigh*

Anyway, on to the books!

CURRENTLY READING

Down and Derby by Alex Cohen and Jennifer Barbee. While on break I’ve decided I need a hobby, and there’s a roller derby info night coming up in early August. I’m taking myself along and I intend to sign up as fresh meat, so I’m learning all I can in the meantime!

A Caribbean Mystery by Agatha Christie. I’ve been reading this for a while now, I have no idea why I’m stuck.

Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews. I put this down in April and haven’t picked it up again *sigh* I sort of hate the plot after the last few books, so I’m hoping some distance will make it easier to read when I do pick it up again.

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

lol nothing. And I’m not sure what’s upcoming either (I do have a couple of drafts sitting around, I should do something with those).

And that’s it from me ๐Ÿ™‚

Top Ten Tuesday #1

Posted 19th December 2016 by Wattle in Blog Hops & Memes / 18 Comments

“Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.”

Yes, it is actually Monday right now. I just couldn’t bring myself to do a review, so I’m opting to post tomorrow’s Top Ten Tuesday instead. Breaking the rules, that’s what I do!

I cannot believe that it’s nearly Christmas, and indeed nearly 2017. How time flies.

Topic: Ten Books I Wouldn’t Mind Santa Leaving Under My Tree

This is actually a list of the first ten books I intend to buy after Christmas, a girl must have her priorities in order after all (and it includes a pre-order or two)!

1. Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham
2. Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil by Melina Marchetta
3. Shield by Rachael Craw – I must admit that I’ve not read the first two books yet, but I wanted to have them all before I started. I have a feeling I’ll need to read them back to back!
4. Goats of Anarchy: Goats Just Wanna Have Fun by Leanne Lauricella. I follow Goats of Anarchy on Instagram and Facebook and while some of their stories are heartbreaking, there’s also a lot of hope.
5. Yassmin’s Story by Yassmin Abdel-Magied, simply because she sounds like a very inspirational lady!
6. The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan. Apollo is one of my favourite Gods, and while I didn’t love the first book like I do the Percy Jackson series, it was still fun (and better than Magnus Chase, in my opinion). I really do enjoy Riordan’s work.
7. Chicken & Egg by The Hairy Bikers. Okay, I can bake things (cakes, cookies, roasts) but actual cooking? I have about 3 things that are good, and everything else tends to fall over. The only meat I like is chicken, and I also like eggs. So uh…perfect cookbook seems perfect!
8. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I prefer the Greek Gods (to the point where they are actually part of my spiritual journey, if you will – I consider myself to be under the Pagan umbrella) but the Norse Gods are just as interesting, even if they are a little cartoony in my head (thanks, Marvel).
9. Flour Water Salt Yeast: The Fundamentals of Artisan Bread and Pizza by Ken Forkish. Because one can never have enough bread books.
10. Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay
